Shark Drum Lines As those who live in my part of the world are aware, we have had 2 very tragic shark fatalities in the past week. One a 29 year old male surfer and the other a 60 year old female diver. These are both tragic events and my heart goes out to their families. I cannot imagine the anguish that must be felt to know that a wild animal has killed a loved one. Unfortunately that is what has occurred. The dilemma of what to do when there has been such an incident always has the government of the day damed if they do and damed if they don't. When there are 2 it is even tougher. Now these animals did not see "humans" in their territory and therefore as food. They saw black seals swimming in their territory and voila dinner was served. When the first attack occurred the government order drum lines to be placed and an incredible 4.1 metre shark was caught, dragged backwards out to sea and subsequently drowned, as that is what happens when a water creature with gills is dragged backwards - the water floods into their gills backwards and they cannot express it from their gills and hence drown. When the second attack occurred drum lines were hoisted and then removed the next day without any catch. It was removed as the seas were too rough. Now, days later it has been put back out there. Who knows where that particular shark is today - it could be anywhere. This particular animal is apparently well over 5.3 metres. Therefore it is a prime specimen and head of the apex. What will the killing of these 2 animals achieve? The animals are travelling through, they are not aware that that particular section of the ocean they live in has humans and therefore is out of bounds for them. They are not aware of what the drum lines are meant to achieve - which is deterring sharks from the area. There has to be a better way to manage the risk that people are at when they are in the same waters as wild animals. They - the humans - are swimming in these waters for purely recreational purposes, not for work, not for health but recreation. They are as entitled as anyone to follow and enjoy the pursuits they love. However are they entitled to do this to the detriment of wild animals? Is it the right of human beings to go into the oceans and kill wild animals, because humans want to play and not be in a situation where that is dangerous? What are your thoughts?
